About QLTS

The Qualified Lawyers Transfer Scheme (QLTS) was implemented on 1 September 2010 and QLTS assessments will be available from 2011. The QLTS provides Qualified Lawyers, who are not solicitors admitted in England and Wales, with a shorter alternative route to qualification to the domestic route.

Kaplan has been appointed as the exclusive provider of assessments on the QLTS for a period of three years. The assessment comprises 3 parts:

  • an MCT (multiple choice test),
  • an OSCE (objective structured clinical examination) and
  • a TLST (technical legal skills test).

In order to pass the QLTS Assessments candidates must pass all three parts within the five year validity period of their certificate of eligibility. Candidates are given a maximum of three attempts at each of the three parts (the MCT, the OSCE and the TLST) within that 5 year period.

You must pass the MCT before enrolling for either the OSCE or the TLST. The OSCE and the TLST may then be taken in any order.

You will find a much more detailed description of the assessments in other sections of this website.

Further details of the scheme can also be found on the SRA’s website at www.sra.org.uk
